Commentary

This category is where I weigh in on the world: events, ideas, arguments, and the occasional thing that simply needed saying. It is opinion writing, and I make no pretense otherwise. These are my views, argued as honestly as I can argue them.

I try to do commentary differently than most of what passes for it now. I am not interested in scoring points or preaching to people who already agree with me. I am interested in examining a question fairly, looking at the evidence, and following it where it leads, even when it leads somewhere uncomfortable. That sometimes means defending unpopular conclusions, and sometimes means questioning popular ones.

If you read these expecting me to line up neatly on one side of every issue, you will be disappointed. I would rather be consistent in my reasoning than predictable in my conclusions.
